Personalities

I met Assif for lunch and we were talking about what would happen if everyone died.
The most interesting aspect of the conversation was if we really knew the people we were playing with.
As Mendez, I pretty much play my egocentric, cowardly, vain self, but what of everybody else?
Assif stated that Thesis is an extension of his drunken self. Slow to thought, quick to inappropriate action.
What of everyone else though? I only know the players through the game and as such, I can’t really distinguish between player and character.
Is Sven very different from the pedantic Eolar?
Is Dag not really a psychotic killer?
If we all re-roll for Dag's next adventure, will our true personalities become further muddled or made clearer?

I can only look back to characters I played. I think my halfling thief "Darth" was the most telling. Short, and dextrous, sure. But also willing to do what the party wanted while also showing traits of hot-headedness that would colour Thesis personality.

I think even if I were to play a magic-user eunuch monk I would still steam in without a thought (or a sword) against any monster.

I never was very good at "role-playing"!

My lasting memories of Assif's Halfling character Darth, were after thespellcasters and fighters had done their worst, Darth would nip in and do the final two points (Including 'back-stab) damage needed to kill the beast.
My character Serad always tended to 'guard the rear'.
;)
Hmmn?

Quiet and introspective?
Calmly self-confident?
I think that's how I'd like to be!
The naive energy is more like the real me!

If we do need to roll up again, I maybe fancy a rogue of questionable morals.

Or maybe just a simple fighter who can actually use weapons and armour!

I've regretfully started thinking about my next character.
I'm determined to try 'role-playing' next and I've got a few ideas.
Being the 'meta-gamer' I am though, it'll depend on the dice roles.
(Or perhaps we should try a point allocation system this time?)

I think most people started thinking about new characters :)
I also have one lined up.
I thought when I created Eolar it would be a character that is completely different to me (fanatic priest) but after a while he became more and more German!!! ;-)

With my next one (if there is a need for one) I try to correct that.....

I am not sure about Dag's psychotic killer persona... It might be a hidden part of him we don't want to know about, maybe something he learned in Belfast? ;)

Wer is somewhere played a bit like myself (expect the women aprt obviously): kind of random and annoying, but still (I hope) nice enough person...

Else for the re-roll... am thinking far to much about it, but will probably be again the same kind of persona, I always found that D&D and similar games are not the best fitted for out-of-character role playing, the classed are much to stereotyped, and one rarely dables into politics and stuff where one needs actual RP and dialogues...

Wer has made me think about a Halfling character.
They're just so small, it makes me smile to think of one as a warrior.

Hehe, I like small too and am gonna stick to it. I decided about my safety character btw, take bodush, make him small, and angryier and slightly cleric-y. and there you go!

The first RPGs I'd played were on video game consoles, so my understanding of "role playing" originally was that I got to control an anime character who used magic and hacked up a whole lot of evil/non-human creatures. Naturally, finding out that people do actually role-play/act with these things is a bit new to me. This is probably why I haven't been "role-playing" much at all. I mean, I'll try not to use out-of-character knowledge when Durin makes decisions, but aside from his use of intimidation, the reasoning behind Durin's decisions is pretty much my own.

I actually started with live action Vampire: The Masquerade (for my sins). That said, the only game where 'roleplaying' and narrative were of some importance was Conspiracy X (think X-Files) - but even then, it was mostly skill rolling and running away from aliens!

I think you're all being a bit unfair.
Admittedly our game is mostly about hitting things, but we have touched on politics (thanks to Moritz) and morality (because I find it funny).
All of our characters have a distinct personality.
Even Thesis!
The only character played that lacked any sense of self was Philippes: Kruddo. (And maybe Ned.)

=) Kirk, the ability to put in things like real ethical and moral issues is exactly what makes D&D (and our group's quests, in particular) better than 90% of console/PC RPGs out there. Trust me, we definitely appreciate that aspect of them. Hell, I still love giving Dag hell for unprovokedly murdering orc women and orc children to this day!

Just supposing it did all pear shaped... Would that open up new possibilities regarding source material, or would we stay DM Guide, PHB1, and Monster Manual only?

If PHB2 became available to us, I could be tempted by the Duskblade again...

Even though it's probably only me who loves the feeling of well thumbed pages between my fingers and the heft of a solid book in my hands, I'd still say no...
Unless someone were to actually buy the 'Player's handbook 2'.
I came across the 'Monster manual 2' in a charity shop and bought it for £1.
Mostly worthless but I did use the 'Half Golem' template for the Derro adventure.

That's fair enough - guess it will be easier for me to use PCGen than do it all manually anyway!

(Might have a look in the charity shop in Marlow, just in case though :-p)
