The journey to Shalalah…
Looking back towards the distant shore, Mendez feels a pang of regret.
Where have Chen and Wer disappeared to?
Of all his companions, despite their initial apparent weakness, he had grown to rely heavily on them both.
Chen was adept at exploiting Mendez’ combat style. He seemed able to dart in and out of the melee but never end up in the way and Wer’s summoned bears made every battle considerably easier.
With a deep sigh, Mendez heads back to the helm.

Guilty
Sitting under a tree just outside Bodush's Mansion I think.
"I am guilty!"
That's the only though I have had since that dreadful day in the mountain.
"I am guilty!"
Guilty of letting horror onto this land. I can not run away from this, it is my duty to pay for what I have done. I understand that the others are scared, but I am sure they will be back to do what has to be done. But I cannot run away. I cannot!
"I am guilty!"
We need a plan. Plans can help. I am sure that with the right allies we can remove the dragon from this land. I made many friends over the past years, we can unite and fight, that can be done, that sounds like a plan. But the Demon... He is the tough one, I hope Chen has found some clues. But I cannot sit idle by.
"I am guilty!"
I need to find Chen, and then I need to find allies. I can't say goodbye to my friends, they would try to convince me to follow them.....
Wer writes a note of goodbye, stands up, slips it under the door, walks back to the tree, and straight through it.

Out of Character
Mendez breathes hard as he looks down at his defeated opponent and then quickly back up to his friends.
He can tell that they are all surprised by his actions and who can blame them. The truth is that he had expected to be entering another dark room where his arrows would have proved worthless.
When confronted by the two massive, Stone golems and a Human armed with two swords in a well-lit room, his choice seemed pretty clear.
Still he is badly hurt and will surely die unless he gets some immediate help.
Gazing around, Mendez groans as he sees both Elogyn and Eolar still in useless cloud form… And where’s Wer?

Get off my cloud
Yes more Stones and Stone Golems ;)
The party readied themselves, knowing that the Necromancer and his creatures must be behind the stone door. Preparing spells to buff themselves up, Durin opened the door. Immediately he launched himself at the largest of the 2 golems in front of him. Amazingly, Mendez decided not to fire his deadly 5 a round arrows and charge in to engage the two-weaponed fighter at the back of the room. And crazily of all, the party decided not to wait until Eolar and Elogyn were fully substantial.
The battle however quickly moved in the adventurers favour. Despite being severely injured and having the finger-of-death pointed in his direction, Mendez, with the help of Chen killed Krael. Wer had summoned 3 Dire Bears to deal with the golems and they and Durin were slowly (!) wearing them down.
Bodush was able to detect the lurking necromancer and fired off a deadly blast of destruction at him. He saw him falter and was sure he had got him. 83 HP damage against a Mage, surely that would be enough to kill him twice!
But, against all odds, the mage had used the time while the adventurers moved through the secret tunnel to prepare himself with Invisibility, Protection from Arrows and Bears Endurance.
And so, with the fight delicately balanced we pause for two weeks ....

No Wer going Fast
The rest of the Party travelled on but Wer and Mendez couldn’t leave the small village of Pearl glen without doing something to address the damage done to the surrounding countryside.
Turning to his diminutive friend, Mendez tries to calm her. ‘Don’t blame them. They just don’t understand the importance of nature.’
Wer glares back. ‘The problem is that their nature is too self important.’
Mendez smiles at Wer’s witty retort.
After three days of restoring the damaged trees and plants, while Mendez searches out and removes Lerrius’ vicious traps, Wer streaks off in hawk form to rejoin the others.
Mendez stays a few extra days, enjoying the hospitality of the grateful people before riding off after his companions.
No matter, though. He’ll arrive in Mausolith soon enough.
Casually tracking his friends he notices that Thesis has gone off in a different direction to the others.

Mine, all mine
It was all clear to Eolar, Bodush, Chen, Durin and Elogyn. The problems in the town and the mine could be laid at the feet of the so-called General Sutter. In an insatiable thirst for power and wealth he had systematically destroyed the Eagle mine and Guthrie Wrigley and his dwarven work-force with it.
But, it seems he had to pay a high price. To consort with a creature as powerful as Tagati the Necromancer was surely a recipe for disaster, and if it ever came to an ultimate struggle for power, there could be only one victor. For now, Tagati was happy to play his part, but for how long?
They were also surprised to have seen 2 of those immense creatures who were carving out wealth and destruction for the General in equal measure - the Stone Golems. A creature so powerful it is said that they are un-affected by magic or weapons. One would have been a challenge, but 2? Surely suicidal.
Thanks to the wonder of Eolar's Wind-Walk, they were able to get out quickly and regroup. Maybe they were wise to to do so, but who knows what Tagati might have in readiness for our adventurers when they return? Clearly, the necromancer was not in evidence in the caverns underneath Eagle mine but his zombies and monsters certainly were. Maybe he was somewhere in Sutter's Hill mine? But, the only way across from the Eagle mine to Sutters appeared to be a water-filled tunnel. Would they brave that entrance or simply wind-walk in through Sutter's Hill?
While they contemplated this in the valley a safe distance from the mines, lady luck seemed to be smiling on them for in the distance they could clearly see the familiar form of an Eagle flying towards them. It was Wer! Now he and his Mud to Rock spell might prove very useful indeed!
Wer explained. She and Mendez had stayed behind for just three days longer in Pearlglen, helping to restore some of the woodland creatures and their devastated habitat. Then, they had traced the party's route to Mausolith and there had found out from Tom Mix at the Platinum Piece what their friends were intending. So, with appropriate haste they set out to find them - Mendez would be with them in a matter of hours.
The party had reformed, holed up in Bodush's magnificent cottage, they contemplated what lay in front of them.

Certain Death if you come: Inn
Finding himself in an unknown Inn, Mendez consults the others.
“We’ve done as requested and now this job is almost over. Bodush and Wer, you can both sleep. Thesis, Chen and I will take turns guarding.
I’ll take the first watch, then Thesis, then Chen. Starting at around one in the night, each watch will last three hours. If the hoodies rise early, so much the better for Chen.”
Mendez, though somewhat comforted by the sturdiness of the stone built Inn, that the rooms are above ground level and the windows are barred, still finds a chair and takes up position outside the door of room 7.
“In the morning, when free of this responsibility, we’ll decide what to do.”
Rubbing his still sore shoulder, Mendez hopes that Durin got the message he'd left for him back in Febril.

In Search for a Bed
The night watchman announced the 12th hour while they escorted the carriages up the road in Gom Dalat. At the first square they stopped and the guard on Lady Benissa's carriage waved Mendez over to the carriage. Lady Benedicta heartily thanked Mendez again for saving her life and handed over a leather pouch containing gems worth 1500gp. As the royal carriage moved on, Bodush could hear a voice behind him "It is time that we find a harbourage for the night". Bodush looked at the black hood of Daleg. "Very well, I can see an inn sign just over there"
"With all due respect, but we want to decide about the inn ourselves this time"
After Bodush exchanged looks with Mendez he nodded and beckoned Daleg to lead the way. They followed the black cloaks down the road towards the inn Bodush had pointed out earlier. At the door one of them got off the carriage and Bodush could hear a spell being cast. Just a moment later a few runes started to glow to the right of the door. Chen, Mendez and Theshiss looked confused at Bodush, but even the sorcerer had to pass after looking at the runes. To everybody's surprise, they were urged to move on and when Wer started to investigate the writing it vanished without trace.
The procedure was repeated at two other inns and the same marks appeared at the same position. At the 4th inn Bodush noticed a difference in the writing. "This is where we are staying tonight!" While Bodush just shrugged his shoulders after a look from Mendez and the others, two of the black cloaks already had entered the inn. By the time the group caught up, a quite satisfied old innkeeper smiled at them. "Your rooms are to the left and right of the one of the hooded gentlemen and already paid for. Numbers 6 and 8". He smiled while he handed over the keys. "I wish a pleasant night. If you need anything, let me know. My servant is already taking care of the cart outside"
The hooded figures had already made their way towards the stairs of the stone building when Daleg turned round again. "This place should be safe, but we would prefer guards to be present. We will have to run some errands tomorrow and are planning to continue the journey by sunrise the day after."
"We will of course place guards outside your door and escort you on your errands" Bodush got more and more interested.
"The escorts won't be necessary. Your people guarding the room will be sufficient! Good night!"
Mendez stopped the innkeeper on the way towards a small door on the other side of the room. "Do you know these people?" "Since I accommodated a first group of six 'bout a month ago, I had some here every few days. They come in groups of three to six and pay very well" A smile went over his face "A lot of the others fear them and there have been some problems in other inns, but I like them. If only all of my guests would be that quiet and easy to handle!"
"Are they from this area? Do you know where they come from?"
The old men laughed "You should know, you brought 'em here! Nobody knows 'em. Just suddenly started to appear a month and a half ago. All of 'em going somewhere into the mountains."
The last words where muttered while the old men left the room. Mendez went back to the others who had listened. They looked at each other "So, what are we going to do? What are the plans?"

A Confusion of St Cuthbertians
A New Banner showing our enjoyment of getting to attack Clerics of St Cuthbert.
Everyone fought bravely, which was lucky considering how tough they would have proven to be if allowed some time to press forward.
Fortunately Chen’s trips and Mendez’ arrows allowed our tanks (Durin and Thesis) and summoners (Wer and Eolar) the time they needed to quell the threat.

Not on my Yacht!
Transferring all the pirates from the captured ‘Iron Sunrise’ to Eolar’s ship, the ‘Pride of St Cuthbert’, Mendez feels the knot in his stomach unravelling.
The pirate prisoners are Eolar’s problem now.
Taking the minimum crew able to effectively pilot the ship, Wer, Chen and Mendez drop back from Eolar, Elogyn, Thesis and Durin.
Keeping Eolar’s ship in sight, Mendez watches Wer contentedly puffing on her pipe and Chen in quiet meditation.
Finally Mendez’ jaw relaxes.

We are sailing, we are sailing, across the water, across the sea
Chen looked out from his station on the crows nest. He felt like he'd found his sea legs, but he still didn't feel especially competent with his role in charge of the rigging. He hoped that they would be able to settle any encounter peacefully. At that moment, Wer returned with news of a fire on the horizon. In closing, they realised a notorious priate ship - so much for a peaceful solution.
****
After the battle, Chen is relieved at the outcome. It could have gone horrible wrong if not for the accuracy of Mendez' bow. Chen felt that he had not acquitted himself well in charge of the rigging - though also noticed his friends in similar difficulties. He acknowledged the importance of keeping manoeveurs simple, and the impact that having the captain's support can have. They must keep this in mind in future encounters.
He was pleased, however, with how he had acted in the boarding action. His ability to deliver a flurry of blows had been particularly effective against the pirate crew, though this was mostly due to his friends' combatative abilities having been limited in this environment as opposed to him excelling.
The encounter with the Kobolds had shown him how useful his unarmed and unarmoured combat style can be. His friends' accounts had highlighted their dependence on weaponry and suits of armour, while he had been able to kill the first Kobold before it even attacked. He had also noticed the impact of his new magic items - the belt and the periapt - on his martial prowess. He can't wait to try Thesis' bracers to discover if they help further as he suspects they might.
Keeping the freshly liberated pirate ship seems to be a good idea, but it will need to be cleaned. It might also provide him with a way, albeit temporarily, to distance himself somewhat from the church of St Cuthbert. He will have to ask Mendez and Wer if they will have him aboard...

Something is Rotten in the State of St Cuthbert
After the torture of the St Cuthbert navy training, Mendez heads back with Eolar to the dormitories.
“We may be at sea for several weeks or more. Enjoy your meditating, I’m hitting the town.”
Whether it’s the claustrophobic feeling of the well ordered but stifling, city within a city or just the fear of the up coming adventure, Mendez feels unsure about his grim faced patrons. Something feels wrong.
The unfortunate Thesis has asked Mendez to help negotiate for certain items. Febril is a cosmopolitan city but a large, green skinned Lizard-man would still be an unusual sight. Mendez himself is still having trouble adjusting to his friend’s transformation.
Storing his armour, sword and bow and taking only a dagger for protection, he leaves all his possessions behind with Eolar in the church buildings.
He collects Thesis and Chen before leaving the compound. Durin and Wer are welcome to come along but seem to have disappeared.
The three friends travel from market to market looking for their own specific desires. Mendez is looking for a bow.
A composite longbow.
A composite longbow for a man as strong as the athletic Mendez.
A magical composite longbow for a man as strong as the athletic Mendez.
Although he’s prepared to pay well over the odds for it, he doesn’t feel optimistic. Still he searches on. Magical arrows would also be useful… And a magical buckler?
(Magical (+1) composite longbow for strength 18 = 2,800gp)
After everyone’s either found what they were looking for or given up, they head back to the compound to drop off their supplies.
Then whispering his suspicions to the other two, they head back out to spend their last night in a ‘Lap dancing’ bar.
They are all still unarmed, though Mendez is confident that his friends can take care of themselves (and him) even without weapons.
Mendez takes only 300gp out with him though. (Just in case).
He spends the money freely, buying drinks for anyone who catches his eye or shares a joke with him.
Pretending to be far drunker than he really is, he asks the reluctant Chen to stay until any sign of danger has passed.
After that, Mendez endeavours to go home with one or more of the exotic ‘dancing’ girls.
He will also try to wake up in time for the morning tide?

Wer it all went Wrong
I’ve gone over the final few encounters in my mind and I think I now know what went wrong…
Wer’s luck didn’t just run out, it went into reverse!
Hilarious, true, but disastrous for the entire party.

Basilisk Banner
New Banner and possibly the last for this party.
Wer and Chen turned to stone. Durin raging while unconscious. Bodush seemingly powerless. Thesis battling on vapors and even Eolar seriously injured.
Where are the side kicks?
Perhaps Wer's Goat and Eolar's cohort Elogyn might have turned the tide.
It's been fun but I can't see you getting out of this one.
Looking forward to you all proving me wrong next session.

Far from Over
Looking down at the smiling Lord Catidsis, Chen feels a shudder of anxiety run through him. The prone, reed thin, greying, unarmoured and unarmed man seems surprisingly uninjured. Eolars religious light seems to have shaken him, but he shows no sign of being burnt by Wer’s fire and there isn’t a scratch on him, despite receiving several, typically ferocious blows from Durin’s mighty War axe.
He's not been able to cast a single healing spell or use any potions as far as Chen can tell.
By all rights this man should be dead several times over and yet he lives!

Divided you’ll Fall
As we’re taking a short break, here is everyone’s current situation.
The Party is currently split into three groups.
Chen, Wer, Thesis and Elogyn are at the damaged fortress with the Monsters for Good and the Grey refugees.
Eolar, Durin and Bodush are the guests of General Oolf, leader of the White army. They are an hour or so inside the Southern White territory.
Ned is in the secret Elven Township with Joey the Elven warrior.
Mendez is hundreds of miles away in his home city.

No More Heroes Anymore
As a DM I’ve obviously hit a potential problem; What motivates the party?
Why are the characters doing the things that they’re doing? Why is each of us adventuring?
Looking at the past adventures, a few things become clear…
The Pirate Wreakers: For Gold and recognition.
The Runaway Gambler: For Gold.
The Darkening Wood: To restore a Church of St Cuthbert.
The Magnificent Seven: Just trying to get back to Seawell.
Munagon: To help the Gnome villagers
The Id, the Ego and the Super Ego: Still just trying to get back to Seawell.
The Baron’s Captive Daughter: Gold, glory and a potentially noble cause.
The Duchess’ Lover: Mendez was ‘enchanted’ by an evil bitch Bard.
Dead Mayor Walking: Gold and Political influence for the Church of St Cuthbert.
The Three Towers: For Gold and then to protect Good and Neutral.
A New Mission: To take over an existing church of Chaos and replace it with a Church of St Cuthbert. (Also as a place to dump Eolar’s dozens of acolytes.)
Eolar’s reasons so far have been the most obvious… Expand the Church of St Cuthbert.
But what about everyone else?
Mendez adventures mostly for the gold and the glory. (Mostly the gold.) This makes him easily set in motion. He is actively good though and wants to forward that goal. “Death to evil!” (As long as the situation isn’t life threatening.)
Wer. I have no idea what motivates Wer, why or what?
Ned. See Wer.
Bodush seems to have a secret agenda. Unfortunately I have no idea what it is. I fear we’ll all find out eventually though.
Durin. It seems battle and adventure are key with the Dwarf.
Thesis. He’s a worry.
‘Trained for war, educated in combat and schooled in fighting. Thesis’ father had imparted his knowledge and love of killing deep into his psyche.’
… I think Thesis just likes hitting things.
Chen’s reasons seem as lost as he himself seems to be. He’s taken on the mantle of ‘Guardian of the Middle’. If there could be an extreme middle, he’d push for it.
So far we have three main motivating forces…
1) Eolar and the Church of St Cuthbert.
2) Gold.
3) Fighting against Evil.
Whoever’s DMing next has got a battle on their hands just to keep the party interested.

Wer Rat in the Woodpile
Wer, sitting under the big oak in the castle having a well deserved break thinks...
"I do kind of like the rag tag group of people in this castle, they are good people... I don't like Eolars plan... He wants to take away from my friends what they built..."
She plays with an acorn fallen from this big tree...
"I have to talk with the lady cleric, I have an idea!" *grins*
"Dear Miss Priestess, do you really think that letting those st-Cuthbert monkeys overtake your humble home and community can help your followers and friends?"

The Worst Scouts in the World
With Wer still busy bringing life back to those slaughtered by her companions, Eolar is eager to prevent another attack on the fortress he covets.
Calling to the others, Eolar shouts, “Elogyn and I are going down to explore the natural basin between here and the final mountain range before the Forbidden lands.”
Chen and Wer look up from their personal tasks. Wer shouts over to him. “I could fly around if you like? It’d only take me a day or so to get a pretty good idea of everything we’d need to know.”
Chen just smiles to himself. ‘A Paladin and a Cleric off exploring? How could that go wrong?'
The less than stealthy Durin and Thesis decide to tag along though and, seeing this, Bodush decides to follow as well.
All three of them however are a little surprised when Elogyn and Eolar saddle up their horses and lead them clip-clopping down the stone steps.

Mini Monsters for Good
Wer prepares and casts reincarnate every morning immediately after breakfast.
Lady Lesyeux had been able to create enough food for everyone in the fortified church, but now with Elogyn, Eolar and even Chen contributing, there’s now more than enough to go around.
In the last four days, the results have been pleasing, if a bit disturbing. Three of the archers had returned as humans and there were some reborn as Elves. More worrying however were those reborn as Orcs. Despite their improved strength, they seemed more disturbed within their new skin than the mixed selection of Kobolds, Goblins and Gnomes wandering around.
The lady Cleric killed by Bodush returns as a strikingly tall Hobgoblinette.
Families are divided regarding how to react to their sons, fathers and husbands returning to them whole, but different than before.
(Everyone please list the spells they remember During this down time.)
