Far from Over

Looking down at the smiling Lord Catidsis, Chen feels a shudder of anxiety run through him. The prone, reed thin, greying, unarmoured and unarmed man seems surprisingly uninjured. Eolars religious light seems to have shaken him, but he shows no sign of being burnt by Wer’s fire and there isn’t a scratch on him, despite receiving several, typically ferocious blows from Durin’s mighty War axe.
He's not been able to cast a single healing spell or use any potions as far as Chen can tell.
By all rights this man should be dead several times over and yet he lives!

This is all very worrying.
If the mad-monk is practically uninjured and all the Canons survived the Sir Elementals and there is a Demon waiting, what chance do we have?
I reckon we are already below half-strength and the enemy has only lost maybe a third of its strength if that.
Get me some healing quick and let me at them!!

Is Thesis feeling a bit pessimistic today??? All clerics are gone (or almost gone), the mad monk lies at our feet and we can just add some injuries. And I'm getting the feeling the appearance of the big monster is strongly linked to the survival of the monk....which is more and more unlikely :)

Tumble is a fantastic skill and potential life saver.
Do you think you can start a 'Tumble' from a prone position?

Good question... I'd argue that you can tumble out of the way (albeit with much more difficulty than normal, and at a dimished pace) as I may need to do it myself at some point! I guess this implies you're rolling around on the floor, trying to avoid getting hit..?

Can you 'tumble' into a non-prone position thus avoiding attacks of opportunity? Hmmm... Not sure about that, since I've got a couple lined up!

After chatting to Sven about it, I think you'd need to make a tumble check (Per surroundee) to rise from prone to avoid any Attacks of Opportunity and then you would have to do it again as you moved away.
Each additional difficulty roll would raise by 2.
Saying that unless you've got the 'Combat reflexes' Feat it doesn't matter.
As I said, 'Tumble' is a brilliant skill.

And I would still say that you already get a +2 at least for the prone position. Getting up and avoiding AoOs is definitely more difficult than a normal tumble move. So your increments would start at DC17.....

I'd say harder.
Let's agree now that getting up from a prone position is a DC: 20. (+2 per additional opponent.)

Sounds fair!

Snap out of it, Assif, we're killing these guys! They've not proven a terrible threat to us yet, so proving us wrong (not via death, but via a bracing struggle) would be pretty cool. Provided we stick to smart fighting and coordinate our attacks, we'll be OK.

Wait, so, if I'm down and want to 'tumble back up again' I'd have to roll a 3?!

I'll take them chances ;-)

As for increments per opponent, that's already handled in the rules for a 'normal tumble' as a +2 per opponent.

Alternatively, I just noticed in the SRD, under 'Epic Uses' that a DC35 check would allow a 'Free Stand':

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/skills.htm#tumble

That would be pretty tough even for Chen (would need 13+)...

I think the DC35 check allowing a 'Free Stand' means that it wouldn't invite an attack of opportunity AND it wouldn't count as any action in that round. i.e. you could still move and attack.
20 seems about fair to me and it also adheres to my nonsensical rule of 5.
(All my DC rolls are 5, 10, 15 etc.)
