The Alone Ranger

Standing by himself and trembling slightly in the cold morning air, Mendez examines the Elven arrows. He can’t shake the feeling that he’s been caught up in the middle of something bigger than he is…
Again!
At least with the Elves, Ogres and Orcs he knows what he’s facing.
What exactly is lurking under those black cloaks?
What exactly is hidden behind the shimmering portal?
Why on Fissa is he still helping them?
His friends seem oblivious to the danger all around them.
Would it be wrong to sneak off by himself back down the mountain?

And that would be an awful lot "move silently" and "hide" checks. See all these stones around you? Were they all there before? :D

Mendez is very, very good at hiding.

Look, we can be pretty sure that those black cloaks are not only evil, they are bad. This is in itself not necessarily a problem for us. Orcs are evil and bad too, and with any luck they might kill eac hother until none of them remain a threat.

However, if they are acutely bad, in a manner that is likely to cause grave danger to all we care about, at least we are conveniently placed to do something about it.

Black cloaks like us.
Elves tried to kill us.
Orks don't know us.

Lets avoid the orks and help the BCs kill the elves.

or vice versa for those of us with less flexible moral dispositions.
